As an indicator of the development of shipping, we report the number of callings to 43 ports in Sweden. The callings to these ports provide an overall picture of the development of vessel traffic to and from Swedish ports. Note that a calling only reports that a vessel has entered the port, it does not say anything about volumes of passengers and / or goods. Most vessels that are classified as passenger vessels can also carry a certain amount of cargo on board. Approximately one fifth of the freight volume was carried by passenger vessels during April this year, according to data from the Swedish Maritime Administration.
During calendar week 11 the number of callings for passenger vessels and cargo vessels together was approximately the same in 2019 as in 2020; just over 800 callings. During the calendar weeks 12 – 23 in 2019, an average of 983 callings were made per week and during the same weeks 2020 this dropped to 762 callings per week, a decrease of 23 percent.
During calendar week 23 in 2020, the number of callings for passenger vessels decreased by 34 percent and for cargo vessels by 23 percent, compared with the same week in 2019 (Figure 1, Figure 2). This corresponds to a total decrease in number of callings for passenger vessels and cargo vessels with 29 percent.
The Swedish Maritime Administration provides statistics on the number of passengers arriving to and the total amount of goods handled in Swedish ports. In April 2020 (approximately calendar weeks 14 – 18), the number of arrived passengers decreased by almost 90 percent, compared with the same month in 2019. Freight volume increased by one percent during the same period.

Note: Passenger vessels consist of ferries, cruise passenger vessels, passenger ro/ro vessels and other passenger vessels.

Note: Cargo vessels consist of tankers, bulk carriers, gas carriers, container carriers, roll on roll off vessels, vehicle carriers and other cargo vessels.
